Aberdeen - Bastion for Quality Architecture?
A major campaign to boost the quality of architectural design could be
launched in Aberdeen. Aberdeen City Council is aiming to link up with
academics, architects, arts organisations, the private sector and the
Scottish Government to drive up standards, and gain international recognition
for Aberdeen as a 'City of Design'. They will have a significant challenge
ahead.
A report has been prepared by the head of planning and infrastructure,
Dr Margaret Bochel. Aberdeen aims to be the first local authority in Scotland
to produce a "Policy on Architecture" to pick up on key themes
in national design policy. 110708
Broadford Works
First Construction won its planning permission appeal, but lost its listed
building consent appeal for £50m urban village at Broadford Works.
Reports suggest Ian Suttie, First's owner, will develop new-build sections
of the village minus the 221 flats in the empty former Richards
textile factory. Went to Planning committee 160807, scroll down page for

Prince's Foundation : Ellon
The Sustainable Growth of Ellon event took place on 14 Jun 2007, organised
by the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment. Hank Dittmar, chief
executive of the Prince's Foundation, said Ellon had become "a dormitory
town" serving Aberdeen "rather than a place in its own right.
The Prince's Trust invited architect Ray Gindroz, chairman of Urban Design
Associates, Pittsburgh, to join the workshop and outline a future model
for the town. Mr Gindroz identified numerous weaknesses in the town's
design, like cul-de-sacs with limited town centre access and large-scale
housing developments rather than proper neighbourhoods.
